Langtang Valley Trek Itinerary: 7, 8 & 10-Day Options

The Langtang Valley trek can be walked in anything from 7 to 10 days, including the road journeys to and from Syabrubesi. Here are the three itineraries that work best, and how to choose between them.

Which Itinerary Is Right for You?

Langtang has no fixed schedule dictated by a high-altitude flight, so its length is flexible. The walking route up the valley is the same; what changes is how many high day-hikes you fit in at Kyanjin Gompa and whether you extend south into the sacred Gosaikunda lakes.

All versions start and finish with the long road journey between Kathmandu and the trailhead at Syabrubesi, roughly 6–8 hours each way.

The Classic 8-Day Itinerary

This is the route most trekkers walk, well-paced, with both high day-hikes from Kyanjin Gompa for the best of the valley's views.

Day 1: Drive Kathmandu → Syabrubesi (1,460 m)

A long, winding drive of roughly 6–8 hours north-west through the foothills, along the Trishuli and Bhote Koshi rivers, to the trailhead village. The road is rough in places, so set off early. (Drive only.)

Day 2: Syabrubesi → Lama Hotel (2,470 m)

The walking begins. Cross the river and climb steadily through mossy oak and rhododendron forest beside the Langtang Khola, with a chance of spotting langur monkeys, to the lodges at Lama Hotel. (5–6 hrs.)

Day 3: Lama Hotel → Langtang Village (3,430 m)

Climb out of the forest as the valley opens, passing Ghodatabela and the first big views of Langtang Lirung, to the rebuilt Langtang village. A moving stretch: you pass the site of the 2015 avalanche and the resettled village that now welcomes trekkers once more. (5–6 hrs.)

Day 4: Langtang Village → Kyanjin Gompa (3,870 m)

A shorter, scenic day past mani walls, prayer wheels and yak pastures to Kyanjin Gompa, built around an old monastery and the valley's famous yak-cheese factory. Afternoon free to rest and acclimatise. (3–4 hrs.)

Day 5: Kyanjin Ri day-hike (4,300–4,770 m)

An acclimatisation day with a steep but rewarding morning climb up Kyanjin Ri, the ridge directly above the village, for close views of Langtang Lirung and its glaciers. Afternoon to explore the monastery, the cheese factory and the upper valley.

Day 6: Tserko Ri day-hike (4,984 m) → Kyanjin Gompa

The high point of the trek: an early start for the long, steady climb up Tserko Ri, the finest viewpoint in the valley, with a near-360-degree panorama of Langtang Lirung and Dorje Lakpa. Descend back to Kyanjin to sleep. (6–8 hrs round trip.)

Day 7: Kyanjin Gompa → Lama Hotel (2,470 m)

Retrace the route down the valley, dropping through Langtang village and the forest. The descent is faster, with fine changing views down-valley. (6 hrs.)

Day 8: Lama Hotel → Syabrubesi → drive Kathmandu

A final morning back through the forest to Syabrubesi, then the long road journey back to Kathmandu. (5–6 hrs walking + drive.)

The Fast 7-Day Itinerary

For walkers short on time who still want to reach the high country. It keeps the same route up to Kyanjin Gompa but fits in only one day-hike and merges the descent and drive on the final day.

  • Day 1: Drive Kathmandu → Syabrubesi (1,460 m).
  • Day 2: Syabrubesi → Lama Hotel (2,470 m).
  • Day 3: Lama Hotel → Langtang Village (3,430 m).
  • Day 4: Langtang Village → Kyanjin Gompa (3,870 m).
  • Day 5: Kyanjin Ri or Tserko Ri day-hike, then back to Kyanjin.
  • Day 6: Kyanjin Gompa → Lama Hotel (2,470 m).
  • Day 7: Lama Hotel → Syabrubesi → drive to Kathmandu.
Choosing just one day-hike, Tserko Ri reaches 4,984 m, gives you less acclimatisation margin. Climb slowly and watch for symptoms, see our Langtang altitude sickness guide.

The 10+ Day Itinerary (with Gosaikunda)

The fullest version for experienced trekkers who want more than the valley alone. Instead of retracing the valley, you head south from Kyanjin Gompa toward the sacred high-altitude Gosaikunda lakes, then continue through the gentle ridges of Helambu back toward Kathmandu, turning a one-week walk into a much longer journey.

  • Days 1–6: The classic Langtang Valley route up to Kyanjin Gompa with both day-hikes.
  • Days 7–9: Descend and cross toward the Gosaikunda lakes via the Lauribina La pass, a serious high crossing.
  • Days 10+: Down through Helambu and back to Kathmandu.

This is the full Langtang-Gosaikunda circuit. It is significantly higher and harder than the valley alone, with a high pass and more days at altitude, so plan acclimatisation carefully.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many days do you need for the Langtang Valley trek?

Most trekkers take 7 to 10 days including the road journeys to and from Syabrubesi. The 8-day version is the comfortable sweet spot, with both the Kyanjin Ri and Tserko Ri day-hikes. A brisk 7-day plan fits in one day-hike, while a 10-day-plus version adds the Gosaikunda lakes.

Can you do Langtang in 7 days?

Yes. A 7-day itinerary keeps the same route up to Kyanjin Gompa but fits in only one high day-hike and merges the final descent and drive. It works well for fit trekkers short on time, though it leaves less acclimatisation margin than the 8-day version.

Should I add Gosaikunda to my Langtang trek?

If you have 10 days or more and prior trekking experience, yes. From Kyanjin Gompa you can cross south to the sacred Gosaikunda lakes and continue through Helambu to Kathmandu. It is the full Langtang-Gosaikunda circuit, higher and harder than the valley alone, with a serious high pass.

Where does the Langtang Valley trek start and finish?

It starts and finishes at Syabrubesi, reached by a road journey of roughly 6–8 hours from Kathmandu. There is no domestic flight involved, which is one reason Langtang is cheaper and more accessible than Everest Base Camp.

Is there a rest day on the Langtang Valley trek?

The acclimatisation day at Kyanjin Gompa, used for the Kyanjin Ri day-hike, doubles as the rest stop. The 8-day version effectively builds in two nights at Kyanjin for both day-hikes, which aids acclimatisation before the high Tserko Ri climb.
