Langtang Valley Trek Cost: Full Budget Breakdown
A guided Langtang Valley trek typically costs USD 500–1,000 per person. Because the trailhead is reached by road rather than by flight, it is one of the cheapest major treks in Nepal. Here is exactly where the money goes.
What Langtang Costs in One Glance
The Langtang Valley trek is one of Nepal's best-value Himalayan walks. It needs no expensive domestic flight, you reach the trailhead at Syabrubesi entirely by road, and it runs on a chain of teahouses, so you carry no camping or food costs. Most trekkers spend between USD 500 and USD 1,000 per person for a 7–10 day trip, depending on style.
| Style | Per day | 7–10 day total | What you get |
|---|---|---|---|
| Backpacker | ~USD 30–45 | USD 300–500 | Shared rooms, basic meals, shared jeep, porter only |
| Standard (guided) | ~USD 60–100 | USD 500–1,000 | Licensed guide, permits, teahouse twin rooms, transport, all logistics |
| Comfort | ~USD 110–160 | USD 1,000–1,500 | Private guide + porter, better lodges, private jeep, buffer days |
The figures above are the on-the-ground trek cost. They exclude your international flights to Kathmandu, your Nepal visa and travel insurance, budget those separately (see below). Money spent here also goes directly to a community rebuilding after the 2015 earthquake.
Line-by-Line Cost Breakdown
Here is where every rupee goes on a standard guided Langtang trek, using 2026 estimates. Trek prices in Nepal are usually quoted in US dollars but paid in a mix of dollars and Nepali rupees (NPR).
Permits: about NPR 5,000 (~USD 38)
- Langtang National Park entry permit: ~NPR 3,000 for foreign nationals.
- TIMS card: ~NPR 2,000 for foreign nationals.
SAARC nationals (including Indians) pay substantially less. See our Langtang permits guide for the full detail.
Guide and porter: USD 25–35 per day
Since 2023 a licensed guide is effectively required in Langtang National Park. Expect USD 25–30/day for a guide and USD 18–25/day for a porter (who carries up to ~20–25 kg, often shared between two trekkers). A combined porter-guide runs around USD 20–28/day. These rates usually include the guide's own food, lodging and insurance, but tips are extra.
Teahouse rooms: NPR 500–1,200 per night
A twin room in a teahouse is cheap, often NPR 500–800 (USD 4–6) low down, rising toward NPR 800–1,200 at higher villages like Langtang and Kyanjin Gompa, where everything is portered or mule-hauled in. Many lodges keep rooms cheap on the understanding that you eat dinner and breakfast there.
Food and drink: USD 18–28 per day
Prices climb gently with altitude as you head up the valley toward Kyanjin Gompa. A plate of dal bhat is the best value on any menu. Budget USD 18–22/day low on the trail and USD 22–28/day high up. Hot drinks, bottled or boiled water, charging, Wi-Fi and hot showers are all paid extras that add up.
Transport: USD 15–60
The Kathmandu to Syabrubesi drive is roughly 6–8 hours each way. A seat on a shared local jeep is ~NPR 1,000–1,800 each way; a private jeep for the group is NPR 18,000–28,000 round trip. This road journey replaces the costly domestic flights that Everest and Makalu treks require, which is the single biggest reason Langtang is so affordable.
A Real Sample Budget (8-Day Trek)
Here is a realistic itemised budget for one person on an 8-day guided Langtang trek from Kathmandu, mid-range style, two trekkers sharing a porter:
| Item | Cost (USD) |
|---|---|
| Park permit + TIMS | 38 |
| Guide (6 trekking days @ 28) | 168 |
| Porter (6 days @ 22, shared = half) | 66 |
| Teahouse rooms (7 nights) | 40 |
| Food + hot drinks (8 days @ 24) | 192 |
| Charging, Wi-Fi, hot showers, water | 35 |
| Kathmandu ↔ Syabrubesi transport (shared jeep) | 40 |
| Guide/porter tips (customary) | 50 |
| Trek total | ~629 |
Booking the same trip as an all-inclusive package through an agency usually lands at USD 500–1,000, the premium buys you fixed logistics, the road transfers, a pre-trek briefing and a single point of accountability if anything goes wrong.
How to Trek Langtang for Less
- Eat dal bhat. It is the best value on any menu, a huge, refillable plate of rice, lentils, vegetables and pickle that fuels a full trekking day for one fixed price.
- Share a porter and guide. Splitting between two or three trekkers roughly halves the biggest line items.
- Take the shared jeep, not a private one, to and from Syabrubesi.
- Trek in the shoulder season. Early March or late November still deliver fine weather with fewer crowds, see best time to trek Langtang.
- Treat your own water instead of buying bottled, and carry a power bank.
- Book in Kathmandu, not abroad. Local Kathmandu agencies are markedly cheaper than international operators selling the identical trek.
Do not economise on a licensed guide, insurance or acclimatisation. Cutting those to save a few dollars is where cheap trips become expensive ones.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does the Langtang Valley trek cost in 2026?
A guided Langtang trek costs roughly USD 500–1,000 per person for 7–10 days, usually covering the guide, porter, permits, road transport, lodging and meals. Backpackers organising it themselves can do it for USD 300–500. This excludes international flights, your Nepal visa and insurance.
Why is Langtang cheaper than Everest Base Camp?
Because the trailhead at Syabrubesi is reached by road, not by an expensive domestic flight. The Lukla flight alone adds USD 350–400 round trip to an Everest trek. Langtang is also shorter and lower, making it one of the best-value major treks in Nepal.
Do I have to pay for a guide on Langtang?
Effectively yes. Since 2023 Langtang National Park requires trekkers to use a licensed guide, costing about USD 25–30 per day. Sharing a guide between two or more trekkers spreads the cost, and a guide adds real value through the cultural context of the Tamang villages.
How much money should I carry on the trek?
Carry enough Nepali rupees in cash for everything on the trail, there are no reliable ATMs beyond Kathmandu and Dhunche, and most teahouses do not take cards. Budget your food, drinks, extras and tips in cash, plus a buffer; withdraw it before you leave Kathmandu.
Are permits expensive for Langtang?
No. The Langtang National Park entry permit (~NPR 3,000) and the TIMS card (~NPR 2,000) together cost only about USD 38 for foreign nationals, a small fraction of the total trek cost. SAARC nationals pay less.
