Langtang Valley Guide & Porter Rules: What You Need to Hire
Langtang Valley was for decades one of the great budget independent treks — short, close to Kathmandu, and easy to do without a crew. Since April 2023, foreign trekkers must hire a licensed guide. Here is what that means in practice, what the crew costs, and how to hire ethically on this shorter trek.
The 2023 Guide Rule on Langtang
The 1 April 2023 Nepal Tourism Board rule applies to Langtang Valley the same as to Annapurna and Everest:
- A licensed guide is mandatory for foreign trekkers on the full Langtang Valley route, from Syabrubesi to Kyanjin Gompa and back. Nepali citizens can still trek without a guide.
- The guide must be employed by a Nepal-government-registered trekking agency. Freelance hires from Thamel or Syabrubesi are not compliant.
- You need a TIMS card and a Langtang National Park entry permit, both processed through your agency. Enforcement is at the Syabrubesi checkpoint.
- A porter is optional. Given the short trek length (5–7 days) and modest altitude (Kyanjin Gompa at 3,870 m), many trekkers skip the porter and just carry a daypack.
The rule hit Langtang particularly hard because independent budget trekking made most sense here — short trek, easy trail, cheap teahouses. It is being enforced consistently. See the Langtang permits guide.
2026 Guide and Porter Rates
Typical 2026 rates on the Langtang Valley trek. Rates cover the crew's food, lodging, insurance and the Kathmandu–Syabrubesi transport.
| Role | Rate (NPR/day) | Rate (USD/day) | What it covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Licensed guide | NPR 3,000–4,500 | USD 22–34 | Guiding, navigation, translation |
| Porter | NPR 2,000–2,800 | USD 15–21 | Carries up to ~20–25 kg of client luggage |
| Guide-porter combo | NPR 3,500–5,000 | USD 26–37 | One person doing both roles; very common on this short trek |
Langtang rates are the lowest of the four major Nepal trek regions because the trek is shortest, altitudes are modest, and no internal flight is involved. A 7-day Langtang guide costs roughly NPR 21,000–31,500 plus NPR 5,000–8,000 in tips. Guide-porter combos are especially popular here.
Tips are separate and customary: NPR 700–1,200/day for a guide and NPR 500–800/day for a porter, pooled at the end.
The Case for a Guide-Porter Combo
On Langtang, the guide-porter combo — one person doing both roles — is not just cheaper, it is the most sensible option for many trekkers. Reasons:
- The trek is short. 5–7 days means one person can carry a shared load and guide without burning out.
- Altitudes are modest. Kyanjin Gompa at 3,870 m is well below the punishing altitudes of Annapurna Circuit or Manaslu, so a combo crew can safely do both jobs.
- The trail is easy to follow. One guide-porter can lead a small group without needing a second person.
- It cuts your crew cost roughly in half versus separate guide + porter. Meaningful for budget trekkers who resent the 2023 rule increasing costs.
The combo works best for solo trekkers or pairs with light luggage (combined under 15 kg). Groups of 3+ with heavier bags still benefit from a separate porter.
Ethical Hiring on Langtang
The same IPPG and KEEP welfare guidelines apply on Langtang — with a specific local nuance because of the 2015 earthquake:
- Hiring locally supports earthquake recovery. Langtang valley lost more than 250 residents in the 2015 avalanche. Locally-owned lodges and local guides get disproportionately little of the trekking spend when trekkers book through international agencies. Booking through a Syabrubesi-based operator or a Kathmandu agency that employs Langtang locals directs more of the fee to the affected community.
- Ask specifically about local hiring. Some agencies book Sherpa or Tamang guides from other regions rather than Langtang-region locals. Ask if the guide is from the Langtang Valley or nearby villages — this is a legitimate hiring preference.
- Standard weight and welfare rules apply. Max 25 kg per porter, 20 kg fair, proper cold-weather gear above 3,000 m, porter insurance confirmed with the agency.
- Tips fairly. Even on a short trek, tips are expected and matter — this is not a rich person's trek and the crew depend on it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a guide for Langtang Valley?
Yes, if you are a foreign national. Since April 2023, foreign trekkers on Langtang must hire a licensed guide from a government-registered trekking agency. Nepali citizens can still trek without a guide. This ended what was previously one of the classic independent budget treks in Nepal.
How much does a Langtang guide cost?
A licensed guide costs NPR 3,000–4,500 per day in 2026 (roughly USD 22–34). Over the standard 7-day trek that is NPR 21,000–31,500 in fees. Tips of NPR 700–1,200 per day are customary on top. A guide-porter combo at NPR 3,500–5,000/day is often the better-value option.
Should I hire a porter on Langtang?
Optional. Given the short trek length (5–7 days) and modest altitude (Kyanjin Gompa at 3,870 m), many fit trekkers just carry a 10 kg daypack themselves. A guide-porter combo is a middle-ground option that also cuts crew cost roughly in half versus separate guide + porter.
Can I hire a guide from Syabrubesi directly?
Officially no — the guide must be from a government-registered trekking agency, and Syabrubesi freelancers are typically not compliant. In practice, some Syabrubesi lodges have relationships with Kathmandu agencies and can arrange a compliant guide on-site, but pre-booking through a Kathmandu agency is the reliable option.
How can I hire in a way that supports Langtang earthquake recovery?
Book through an agency that employs Langtang-region locals (ask specifically whether the guide is from the Langtang Valley or nearby villages) and stay at locally-owned lodges rather than the small number of Kathmandu-investor-run ones. The 2015 earthquake killed more than 250 valley residents, and directing trekking spend to local operators is the practical form of ongoing recovery support.
