The Two Best Seasons

Langtang can be trekked year-round, but two windows stand out for clear skies, stable weather and, crucially on this route, safe road access along the landslide-prone Kathmandu to Syabrubesi drive.

Month-by-Month

October

The single best month. Post-monsoon air is washed clean, giving the year's sharpest views of Langtang Lirung and the upper-valley glaciers, with comfortable daytime temperatures and cold, clear nights. Also the busiest: book lodges ahead at Kyanjin Gompa and expect company on the Tserko Ri ridge at dawn.

November

Still superb and slightly quieter than October as the month progresses. Crystal skies and firm, dry trails, with cold nights well below freezing at Kyanjin. Late November sees the first cold snaps and early snow on the high ridges.

December–February

Cold and quiet. The lower valley is pleasant by day, but Kyanjin Gompa and the Kyanjin Ri and Tserko Ri ridges are deep-freeze cold, and snow can close some high lodges. Clear winter days still deliver superb views for the well-prepared. Check whether teahouses at Kyanjin are open before committing.

March–April

Spring's headline act: the rhododendron forests below Langtang village burst into red and pink bloom. Excellent views early in the day, warming temperatures and lively trails. April can grow hazy in the afternoons as pre-monsoon heat builds, so climb the ridges at dawn.

May

Warm and green low down, with afternoon cloud build-up common. Good for those who want spring colour and fewer crowds than April, but views are often best at first light before the haze rises.

June–September (Monsoon)

Heavy rain, leeches in the forest and frequent cloud hiding the peaks. The decisive factor on Langtang is the road: the long Syabrubesi drive is prone to landslides and long delays in heavy rain, which can strand trekkers at either end. Best avoided.

The Road Factor

Unlike fly-in treks, Langtang's biggest seasonal hazard is not on the trail but on the Kathmandu to Syabrubesi road, a 6–8 hour mountain drive that follows river gorges and crosses slide-prone slopes.

• In monsoon, landslides regularly block or delay this road; a washout can add days to your trip or cancel it.
• In autumn and spring, the road is at its most reliable, dry, firm and open.
• After any heavy rain, allow buffer time at both ends and follow local advice on conditions.

Festivals & Timing Tips

• Dashain & Tihar (Oct–Nov): Nepal's biggest festivals fall in peak season. Trails and lodges are busy and some staff travel home, so book early.
• For fewer crowds with great weather: aim for late September (early autumn) or late November, and early March or late May in spring.
• Start the high day-hikes early year-round, the Langtang peaks are clearest at dawn before cloud and haze build.
