Best Time to Trek Gokyo Lakes: Month-by-Month
The best time to trek Gokyo Lakes is autumn (late September–November) and spring (March–May). Here is what every month actually feels like at these high Khumbu altitudes.
The Two Best Seasons
Gokyo can be trekked in either of the two main Himalayan windows, and the choice matters more than usual here because of the high sleeping altitudes and, if you add it, the snow-prone Cho La pass.
| Season | Months | Views | Crowds | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Autumn | Late Sep–Nov | Best of the year | Busiest | ⭐ Peak season |
| Spring | Mar–May | Excellent, hazier late | Busy | ⭐ Rhododendrons low down |
| Winter | Dec–Feb | Crisp but bitter | Very quiet | Hardy trekkers only; Cho La often blocked |
| Monsoon | Jun–early Sep | Cloudy, wet | Empty | Avoid, cloud & Lukla flight delays |
Autumn is the most reliable window overall, see the autumn season guide for why it is Nepal's prime trekking time.
Month-by-Month
Late September
The monsoon is retreating and the air is washing clean. Trails can still be a little wet early on, but crowds are thinner than October and the views are sharpening by the day, a fine, quieter start to the season.
October
The single best month. Post-monsoon air gives the year's sharpest views from Gokyo Ri, stable weather and the most reliable Lukla flights. Also the busiest, so book lodges and flights ahead and expect company at the sunrise viewpoint.
November
Still superb and slightly quieter as the month goes on. Crystal skies and increasingly cold nights, well below freezing at Machhermo and Gokyo. Late November brings the first hard cold snaps.
December–February
Bitterly cold at these altitudes and very quiet. Lower stages can be pleasant by day, but Gokyo is a deep-freeze and some high lodges close. The Cho La pass is frequently snow-blocked and dangerous, so the standalone lakes trek is just about feasible for hardy, well-equipped trekkers, but the Cho La combination is best avoided.
March–April
Spring's headline act: rhododendron forests bloom on the lower trail, temperatures warm, and views are excellent early in the day. A strong second season, with lively trails and reliable flights.
May
Warm and green low down, with afternoon cloud and haze building as pre-monsoon heat rises. Good for spring colour and slightly fewer crowds than April, but the peaks are clearest at dawn before the haze.
June–early September (Monsoon)
Heavy cloud hides the mountains, trails are wet, and Lukla flights are at their most delay- and cancellation-prone. Best avoided, see the monsoon season guide.
Lukla Flights & the Cho La Factor
Two things shape the Gokyo calendar more than temperature alone:
- Lukla flight reliability. The whole trek hinges on a weather-dependent mountain flight. It is most reliable in stable autumn, decent in spring, and worst in the monsoon. Always build in one or two contingency days for delays.
- The Cho La pass. If you plan the Gokyo–Cho La–EBC combination, the glaciated pass at 5,420 m needs settled, snow-free conditions. It is realistic in autumn and late spring, marginal after storms, and frequently closed in winter, see also the Everest Three Passes route.
Festivals & Timing Tips
- Dashain & Tihar (Oct–Nov): Nepal's biggest festivals fall in peak season. Flights and lodges are busy and some staff travel home, so book early.
- For fewer crowds with great weather: aim for late September or late November, and early March or late May in spring.
- Start early each day, always. Mountains are clearest at dawn before cloud and haze build, and the Gokyo Ri climb is a pre-dawn one anyway.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best month to trek Gokyo Lakes?
October is the best single month, post-monsoon skies give the clearest views from Gokyo Ri, stable weather and the most reliable Lukla flights. November and March–April are close behind. October is also the busiest, so book flights and lodges ahead.
Can you trek Gokyo Lakes in winter?
The standalone lakes trek is just about feasible in December–February for hardy, well-equipped trekkers, but it is bitterly cold, some high lodges close, and the Cho La pass is frequently snow-blocked and dangerous. The Cho La–EBC combination is best avoided in winter.
Is monsoon a bad time for the Gokyo trek?
Yes. June to early September brings heavy cloud that hides the peaks, wet trails, and the worst Lukla flight delays and cancellations of the year. It is the season to avoid for an Everest-region trek.
When is the Cho La pass safest to cross?
In stable autumn (late September–November) and late spring, when the glaciated 5,420 m pass is most likely to be snow-free and settled. It is marginal after storms and frequently closed in winter, so cross only in clear conditions with a licensed guide.
Is the Gokyo trek crowded?
Less than standard Everest Base Camp, as it branches up a quieter valley, but in peak October and April the trail and the Gokyo Ri sunrise can still be busy. For a quieter trek with similar weather, choose late September, late November or early March.
