Gokyo Lakes Trek Packing List: What to Bring
Pack for a high, cold Himalayan trek: warm layers, a below-freezing sleeping bag, broken-in boots and a reliable headlamp for the pre-dawn Gokyo Ri climb. Here is the full checklist.
Packing Principles for Gokyo
Gokyo reaches sleeping altitudes near 4,790 m and a high point of 5,357 m on Gokyo Ri, so you are packing for genuine cold and thin, dry air even in the best seasons. Two rules matter most:
- Layer, don't bulk. Days can be warm in the sun and nights well below freezing, so a system of layers you can add and shed beats one heavy coat.
- Keep the porter load sensible. A porter carries up to about 20–25 kg, often shared between two trekkers, so pack disciplined and carry your valuables, water and warm layers in your own daypack.
You can rent big-ticket items, a down jacket and a below-freezing sleeping bag, in Kathmandu's Thamel for roughly NPR 100–200/day each, which the cost guide factors in.
Clothing: The Layer System
| Layer | What to pack |
|---|---|
| Base | 2–3 moisture-wicking thermal tops and bottoms (merino or synthetic) |
| Mid | Fleece or light down jacket; trekking trousers; a couple of trekking shirts |
| Insulation | A warm down jacket (rentable in Kathmandu) for cold mornings and Gokyo Ri |
| Shell | Waterproof/windproof jacket and over-trousers |
| Extremities | Warm hat, sun hat, buff, liner + insulated gloves, warm and liner socks |
The pre-dawn Gokyo Ri climb is the coldest hour of the trek, so have your warmest hat, gloves and down jacket ready the night before.
Footwear, Sleeping & Essential Gear
- Sturdy, broken-in trekking boots, never new on day one, plus camp shoes or sandals for teahouses.
- Sleeping bag rated well below freezing (around −10 to −15°C comfort). Rentable in Thamel; teahouse blankets alone are not enough at Gokyo.
- Trekking poles, they save the knees on the long descents to Lukla.
- A reliable headlamp with spare batteries, essential for the pre-dawn Gokyo Ri ascent.
- Daypack (25–35 L) for your own layers, water, camera and valuables; a larger duffel for the porter.
- Water treatment (filter, SteriPen or purification tablets) to avoid buying costly bottled water high up.
- Power bank and adapters, charging is a paid extra that gets pricey with altitude.
If you plan the Cho La pass extension, add microspikes or crampons and confirm conditions with your guide, see the difficulty guide.
Sun, Snow & Health Kit
At altitude the sun and glare are fierce, and the air is dry:
- High-SPF sunscreen and SPF lip balm, sunburn comes fast on snow and at altitude.
- Category-4 or glacier sunglasses, snow glare off the lakes and glacier is intense.
- Personal first-aid kit: blister care, painkillers, rehydration salts, any personal medication, and altitude medication (such as acetazolamide) discussed with your doctor, see the altitude sickness guide.
- Hand sanitiser, wet wipes and quick-dry towel, hot showers are limited and paid.
- Reusable water bottles / bladder (2–3 L capacity) plus an insulated bottle for hot water high up.
Documents, Money & Extras
- Passport, permit copies and passport photos, for the Sagarmatha and Khumbu permits.
- Travel insurance documents covering trekking to at least 5,500 m with helicopter evacuation.
- Plenty of Nepali rupees in cash, ATMs are unreliable beyond Namche Bazaar.
- Snacks and electrolytes, energy bars, nuts and drink mixes for the long, high days.
- Small comforts, earplugs, a book or e-reader for weather delays, and a dry bag to keep gear dry.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I pack for the Gokyo Lakes trek?
Pack for a high, cold trek: a layered clothing system, a warm down jacket, a sleeping bag rated well below freezing, sturdy broken-in boots, trekking poles, a headlamp for the pre-dawn Gokyo Ri climb, sun and snow protection, water treatment and a personal first-aid kit with altitude medication.
How warm a sleeping bag do I need for Gokyo?
A bag rated well below freezing, around −10 to −15°C comfort, because nights at Machhermo and Gokyo (near 4,790 m) are bitterly cold and teahouse blankets alone are not enough. You can rent a suitable bag in Kathmandu for roughly NPR 100–200 a day.
Can I rent trekking gear in Kathmandu?
Yes. Down jackets and below-freezing sleeping bags are widely rented in Thamel for about NPR 100–200 a day each, which is cheaper than buying if you only trek occasionally. Boots are better bought and broken in at home before the trek.
Do I need crampons for the Gokyo trek?
Not for the standard out-and-back to Gokyo and Gokyo Ri. But if you add the glaciated Cho La pass to reach Everest Base Camp, pack microspikes or crampons and confirm the conditions with your guide, as the pass can be icy and exposed.
Why do I need a headlamp on the Gokyo trek?
Because the highlight, the climb of Gokyo Ri (5,357 m), is done pre-dawn to catch sunrise over Everest, Lhotse, Makalu and Cho Oyu. You start in the dark, so a reliable headlamp with spare batteries is essential, along with your warmest layers.
