Janaki Mandir & Janakpur Cost Guide: Budget for a Pilgrimage

Temple Entry: Free

Start with the good news: entry to the Janaki Mandir is free. It is a living temple, not a ticketed monument, and pilgrims and visitors walk in without charge. The small costs you will meet around the temple are:

• Shoe-keeping: a token amount, typically NPR 10–20, at the stand near the gate.
• Offerings: a basic plate of flowers, incense and sweets from the plaza stalls runs roughly NPR 50–200; grander offerings with coconut, cloth and garlands cost more.
• Arranged puja: if a priest performs a puja on your behalf, dakshina is by negotiation, typically a few hundred rupees for a short ritual, agree it beforehand.
• Vivah Mandap: a small entry fee, typically well under NPR 100, is sometimes collected at the pavilion beside the temple.
• Donations: entirely voluntary; donation boxes stand inside the complex.

Within the city, cycle-rickshaw hops cost small change (roughly NPR 50–150 for short rides), an auto-rickshaw to the airport or station a little more, and a half-day vehicle hire out to Dhanushadham typically runs roughly NPR 2,000–4,000 depending on the vehicle and your bargaining. Hotels & Meals in Janakpur

Janakpur accommodation is aimed at pilgrims and domestic travellers, so prices are gentle by international standards:

• Dharamshalas & simple guesthouses (roughly NPR 600–1,500): basic, functional rooms near the temple, ideal for pilgrims on a tight budget.
• Mid-range hotels (roughly NPR 1,800–4,000): clean rooms with air conditioning, worth its weight in gold on the Terai, hot water and Wi-Fi.
• Best in town (roughly NPR 4,000–6,000+): the city's larger hotels with generators, on-site restaurants and the most comfort available.

Food is cheaper still. A Maithili thali of rice, dal and vegetable dishes typically costs roughly NPR 150–400, sweets like thekua, khaja and pera run NPR 50–200 a portion, and tea is pocket change. Even eating well at restaurant level, most travellers struggle to spend more than NPR 1,000–1,500 a day on food.

Sample 2-Day Budgets

Two realistic per-person estimates for a two-day, one-night pilgrimage, assuming shared mid-range rooms and a mix of local eating. Treat them as ballparks, not quotes.

Money Tips for Janakpur

• Carry cash in Nepali rupees. Cards are rarely accepted outside the bigger hotels. ATMs exist in the city centre but can be unreliable and run dry around festivals, so arrive with enough.
• Keep small notes (NPR 10, 20, 50, 100) for offerings, shoe-keeping, rickshaws and tea, large notes are a constant nuisance at stalls.
• Indian rupees are often accepted informally near the border and by some traders, but the rate is rarely in your favour; changing to NPR is cleaner.
