By Air (Recommended)

For most visitors the flight is worth it: Buddha Air and Yeti Airlines connect Kathmandu with Bhairahawa's Gautam Buddha International Airport in about 35 minutes, with multiple daily departures. Fares run roughly NPR 5,000–8,000 for Nepali and Indian nationals; foreign travellers pay the standard higher dollar fare (about US$110–130 one way).

From the airport, Lumbini's Sacred Garden is about 22 km west — a 45–60 minute taxi ride (agree ~NPR 1,500–2,500, or arrange hotel pickup). Sitting on the right side flying out of Kathmandu gives Himalayan views on clear mornings. Flying converts a punishing road day into a half-day and makes a one-night Lumbini visit realistic.

By Bus

Direct buses link Kathmandu with Bhairahawa (Siddharthanagar) and some continue to Lumbini itself; otherwise local buses and taxis cover the last 22 km. The route follows the Prithvi Highway to Mugling, drops to Narayanghat, then runs west along the East–West Highway — 8–10 hours in total, longer with traffic or roadworks.

  • Day tourist/deluxe buses: roughly NPR 1,200–1,800, morning departures from Kathmandu's tourist bus points.
  • Overnight buses: from about NPR 900–1,500 — you save a day but arrive early and sleep-deprived; choose a reputable operator.
  • From Sonauli border: Indian pilgrims crossing at Sunauli/Belahiya reach Lumbini in under an hour by taxi or local bus.

By Private Car & Combinations

A private car (NPR 15,000–22,000 one way, 7–8 hours) makes most sense as part of a loop rather than a straight shot. Natural pairings:

  • Via Chitwan — Sauraha sits near the halfway point; two nights of safari breaks the journey perfectly (Lumbini is 3–4 hours west of Chitwan).
  • Via Pokhara — Lumbini is 6–7 hours south of Pokhara via the Siddhartha Highway, closing a classic Kathmandu–Pokhara–Lumbini triangle.
  • Manakamana — the cable-car temple stop works on the outbound Prithvi Highway leg.

See our full Lumbini guide for what to do once you arrive — plan at least a half day for the Sacred Garden and monastery zone, ideally with dawn or dusk at the Maya Devi Temple.

Practical Tips

  • Fly at least one way — the road day is long and the flight is Nepal's best-value time purchase.
  • Best season: October–March; the Terai is brutally hot April–June and wet through the monsoon. Buddha Jayanti (usually May) is the great festival draw despite the heat — see Nepal in May.
  • Stay inside the garden zone if possible — monastery guesthouses and nearby hotels let you walk to the Maya Devi Temple at dawn.
  • Carry small cash for rickshaws, site tickets and the airport taxi; cards are patchy outside bigger hotels.
  • Border crossers: the Sunauli/Belahiya crossing from India is 27 km from Lumbini — visas on arrival are available for most nationalities.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far is Lumbini from Kathmandu?

About 280 km by road, taking 8–10 hours by bus. Flying from Kathmandu to Bhairahawa takes about 35 minutes, followed by a 45–60 minute, 22 km drive to the Lumbini Sacred Garden.

How much does it cost to get from Kathmandu to Lumbini?

By bus: roughly NPR 900–1,800 depending on class. By air: NPR 5,000–8,000 for Nepali/Indian nationals or about US$110–130 for foreigners, plus a NPR 1,500–2,500 taxi from Bhairahawa airport.

Is there an airport at Lumbini?

The nearest airport is Gautam Buddha International Airport at Bhairahawa, about 22 km from Lumbini. Buddha Air and Yeti Airlines fly there from Kathmandu several times daily in around 35 minutes.

Can I visit Lumbini as a day trip from Kathmandu?

Only by flying, and it makes for a rushed day. Far better is one night: fly in, spend the afternoon and following dawn in the Sacred Garden and monastery zone, and fly back.

How do I get from Chitwan to Lumbini?

Lumbini is 3–4 hours west of Chitwan (Sauraha) by road via Narayanghat and the East–West Highway. Buses run via Bhairahawa, and private cars cost roughly NPR 8,000–12,000 — making Chitwan the natural halfway stop from Kathmandu.

What is the best time to visit Lumbini?

October to March, when the Terai is dry and comfortable (down to 10–24°C in December–January). Buddha Jayanti, usually on the May full moon, is the most important festival despite the pre-monsoon heat.
