By Tourist Bus (Most Popular)
Most travellers take the morning tourist bus, which runs direct from Kathmandu to Sauraha, the village hub on Chitwan National Park's eastern edge. Buses leave in the early-morning convoy from Sorhakhutte/Kantipath (the same departure point as the Pokhara buses), follow the Prithvi Highway along the Trishuli River, then turn south at Mugling to drop through the gorge to Narayanghat and the Terai plain.
Expect 5–7 hours including a breakfast or lunch stop at a riverside highway restaurant. Standard tourist coaches run around NPR 800–1,200; deluxe/AC services with reclining seats reach NPR 1,500. Book a day or two ahead through any Thamel agency or your hotel — and note that most buses arrive at the Sauraha bus park just outside the village, where lodge jeeps and shared rides cover the last couple of kilometres.
By Air (Fastest)
Buddha Air and Yeti Airlines fly the Kathmandu–Bharatpur route in about 25 minutes, with several departures daily. Fares for Nepali and Indian nationals typically run NPR 4,000–6,500 one way; foreign visitors pay a higher dollar fare (roughly US$90–120), as on all Nepali domestic routes.
From Bharatpur airport it is a 30–45 minute taxi or lodge-jeep ride to Sauraha (arrange pickup with your lodge — most include it). Flying turns a full travel day into a morning, making a 2-night safari feasible even on a tight itinerary. The catch: morning fog in winter and monsoon storms can delay the short hop, so keep some slack before international connections.
By Private Car & Stops
A private car or jeep costs about NPR 10,000–16,000 one way and does the drive in roughly five hours — with the freedom to stop. Worthwhile breaks:
- Manakamana cable car — the wish-fulfilling goddess's hilltop temple, right at the Mugling turn. Allow 2–3 hours.
- Riverside lunch at Kurintar — the Trishuli-side resorts make a scenic halfway stop.
- Devghat — the sacred river confluence just above Narayanghat, an easy short detour for temple-goers.
Split among three or four passengers, a car compares well with flying for cost — and pairs Chitwan naturally with an onward leg to Pokhara (about 3–4 hours further) or Lumbini (3–4 hours west).
Practical Tips
- Sit on the left leaving Kathmandu for the best Trishuli River views.
- Book lodge pickup ahead: whether you land at Bharatpur or the Sauraha bus park, a pre-arranged jeep saves haggling in the heat.
- Time your season: October–March is prime safari weather; the monsoon (June–September) brings floods, closures and limited activities — see our full Chitwan guide.
- Combine smartly: the classic loop runs Kathmandu → Chitwan → Pokhara (or reverse), avoiding any backtracking on the same highway.
- Monsoon road caution: the Mugling–Narayanghat stretch is landslide-prone in heavy rain — prefer flying in July–August.
Frequently Asked Questions
How far is Chitwan from Kathmandu?
About 160–180 km by road to Sauraha, the main safari village, via the Prithvi Highway and Mugling. The drive or bus takes 5–7 hours; flying to nearby Bharatpur takes about 25 minutes plus a 30–45 minute transfer.
How much is the tourist bus from Kathmandu to Chitwan?
Standard tourist buses cost roughly NPR 800–1,200 one way in 2026, with deluxe/AC coaches up to about NPR 1,500. Buses leave Kathmandu in the early-morning convoy and arrive in Sauraha by early-to-mid afternoon.
Can you fly from Kathmandu to Chitwan?
Yes — Buddha Air and Yeti Airlines fly Kathmandu to Bharatpur in about 25 minutes, several times daily. From Bharatpur it is a 30–45 minute drive to Sauraha; most lodges arrange pickup.
Is the road from Kathmandu to Chitwan good?
It is a winding but paved highway. The Prithvi Highway section follows the Trishuli River, then the Mugling–Narayanghat road drops to the plains. Roadworks and traffic can slow things; in the monsoon, landslides occasionally cause delays.
Should I stop at Manakamana on the way to Chitwan?
If you have a private vehicle, it is the natural break: the cable-car base station sits at Kurintar just before the Mugling turn-off, and the temple visit takes two to three hours. Tourist buses do not stop there.
Chitwan first or Pokhara first?
Either works — the classic triangle runs Kathmandu → Chitwan → Pokhara or the reverse, since Chitwan sits roughly between the two. Doing Chitwan in the middle avoids repeating any road section.
