Best Time to Trek Tilicho Lake: Month-by-Month

The best time to trek Tilicho Lake is autumn (October–November) and spring (March–May). At this altitude the timing matters more than on any foothill trek, so here is what every month feels like.

The Two Best Seasons

Tilicho follows the same seasons as the wider Annapurna Circuit, but altitude sharpens the stakes: the lake (4,919 m), the exposed Khangsar traverse and the Thorong La (5,416 m) can all be snowbound or dangerous outside the prime windows.

Month-by-Month

October

The single best month. Post-monsoon air is washed clean, giving the year's sharpest views, the most stable weather for the exposed traverse and the safest window for the Thorong La. Also the busiest, book high lodges ahead, as Tilicho Base Camp has limited beds.

November

Still superb and slightly quieter as the month progresses. Crystal skies and cold nights, well below freezing at base camp and the pass. Late November brings the first cold snaps and early snow high up.

December–February

Bitterly cold, and the Thorong La and the lake approach are frequently closed by snow. The Manang valley itself is quiet and clear, but the high section is a serious winter mountaineering proposition rather than a trek. Best avoided unless you are very experienced and flexible.

March–April

Spring's prime window: warming days, longer daylight and good views, with rhododendron colour lower down. Snow can still linger on the traverse and the pass early in the season, so late spring is more reliable up high.

May

Warm and green low down, with afternoon cloud building as pre-monsoon heat rises. Views are often best at dawn. A good choice for spring colour with thinner crowds than April.

June–early September (Monsoon)

The worst time. Rain and cloud hide the peaks, and, critically, the already-unstable Khangsar-to-Tilicho traverse becomes highly prone to landslides and rockfall. Unlike the rain-shadow of nearby Mustang, the approach valleys get heavy monsoon rain. Avoid.

Snow, Landslides & Weather Windows

Two hazards define Tilicho's timing, and both are worse outside autumn and late spring:

  • The exposed Khangsar traverse to Tilicho Base Camp crosses loose scree that is most dangerous in and after monsoon rain, when landslides and rockfall are common. Cross it early in the morning in dry, settled weather.
  • The Thorong La (5,416 m) is prone to sudden storms and deep snow. The 2014 pre-winter blizzard on the pass killed dozens of trekkers, a reminder to cross only in clear, settled conditions and to build a buffer day.

More on both in the Tilicho altitude & safety guide and the difficulty guide.

Festivals & Timing Tips

  • Dashain & Tihar (Oct–Nov): Nepal's biggest festivals fall in peak season. Trails and the few high lodges are busy and some staff travel home, so book early.
  • For fewer crowds with good weather: aim for late October or mid-November in autumn, and late April into May in spring, when high snow has cleared.
  • Start early every day to cross the traverse and the pass in the calm, clear morning before wind, cloud and afternoon instability build.
  • Keep buffer days whatever the season, at this altitude a single storm can cost you a day at the pass. See autumn for why it is the standout window.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best time to trek Tilicho Lake?

Autumn (October–November) is the prime season, with the most stable weather and the safest conditions on the exposed traverse and the Thorong La, followed by spring (March–May). October gives the clearest views of the year but is the busiest month, so book the limited high lodges ahead.

Can you trek Tilicho Lake in winter?

The high section is best avoided in deep winter (December–February). The Thorong La and the lake approach are frequently closed by snow and the cold is severe. The Manang valley lower down stays clear, but crossing the pass in winter is a serious mountaineering proposition, not a trek.

Is monsoon a bad time for the Tilicho trek?

Yes, it is the worst time. Rain and cloud hide the peaks, and the already-unstable Khangsar-to-Tilicho traverse becomes highly prone to landslides and rockfall. Unlike rain-shadow Mustang, the approach valleys get the full monsoon. Avoid June to early September.

Is it safe to cross the Thorong La in spring?

Yes, in late spring. March and early April can still have lingering snow on the pass and the traverse, so late April into May is more reliable up high. Always cross in clear, settled weather, start before dawn, and keep a buffer day in case of a storm.

How cold does it get on the Tilicho trek?

Nights at Tilicho Base Camp and near the Thorong La drop well below freezing even in peak autumn, and the pre-dawn starts for the lake and the pass are bitterly cold and windy. A proper down jacket and a warm sleeping bag are essential year-round on the high section.
