Best Time to Trek Mardi Himal: Month-by-Month
The best time to trek Mardi Himal is autumn (October–November) and spring (March–May). Here is what every month actually feels like on the ridge.
The Two Best Seasons
Mardi Himal can be trekked most of the year, but two windows stand out for clear skies, stable weather and safe footing on the exposed upper ridge.
| Season | Months | Views | Crowds | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Autumn | Oct–Nov | Best of the year | Busiest (still quiet) | ⭐ Peak season |
| Spring | Mar–May | Excellent, hazier late | Moderate | ⭐ Rhododendrons in bloom |
| Winter | Dec–Feb | Crisp but cold | Very quiet | Doable, snow/ice on the upper ridge |
| Monsoon | Jun–Sep | Cloudy, wet | Empty | Avoid, leeches, fog, no views |
Month-by-Month
October
The single best month. Post-monsoon air is washed clean, giving the sharpest Machhapuchhre and Annapurna views of the year, with comfortable days and cold, clear nights at High Camp. Even at its busiest, Mardi stays quieter than nearby ABC.
November
Still superb and beautifully quiet. Crystal skies, cold nights (below freezing at High Camp), and firm footing on the summit ridge. Late November brings the first cold snaps.
December–February
Cold and empty. Lower forest stages are pleasant by day, but High Camp and the viewpoint are deep-freeze cold, snow can make the exposed final ridge icy, and some high teahouses close. Trekkable for the well-prepared with warm gear, microspikes and a willingness to turn back if the ridge is snowbound.
March–April
Spring's headline act: the rhododendron forests on the lower ridge burst into red and pink bloom. Excellent morning views, warming temperatures and lively but uncrowded trails. April can grow hazy in the afternoons as pre-monsoon heat builds.
May
Warm and green low down, with afternoon cloud build-up common. Good for spring colour with fewer people than April, but views are best at dawn before the haze rises.
June–September (Monsoon)
Heavy rain, leeches in the forest, and cloud that usually hides the peaks. The Annapurna foothills get the full force of the monsoon, and the exposed ridge is no place to be in a storm. Best avoided, though the hillsides are lush and green.
Snow, Cloud & the Exposed Ridge
The defining factor on Mardi Himal is not deep-altitude danger but the steep, narrow, exposed final ridge above High Camp to the 4,500 m viewpoint. Weather decides whether that section is straightforward or genuinely serious.
- After snowfall (most likely December–March) the ridge can be icy and slippery, with big drops on either side. Carry microspikes and be ready to turn back at the Lower Viewpoint (3,900 m).
- Climb the ridge early in the morning, when it is firmest and clearest, before cloud builds.
- Trek with a licensed guide who can read conditions on the upper section.

Festivals & Timing Tips
- Dashain & Tihar (Oct–Nov): Nepal's biggest festivals fall in peak season. Even quiet Mardi's limited high teahouses can fill, and some staff travel home, so book ahead.
- For fewer crowds with great weather: aim for late September or late November in autumn, and early March or late May in spring.
- Start early each day. The mountains, and the safety of the summit ridge, are clearest at dawn before cloud and haze build.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best month to trek Mardi Himal?
October is the best single month, post-monsoon skies give the clearest Machhapuchhre and Annapurna views of the year with comfortable temperatures. November and March–April are close behind. Even in peak season Mardi Himal stays quieter than nearby ABC.
Can you trek Mardi Himal in winter?
Yes, but carefully. December to February brings crisp, quiet trails but bitter cold at High Camp, and snow can make the exposed final ridge to the 4,500 m viewpoint icy. Bring warm gear and microspikes, go with a licensed guide, and be ready to turn back at the Lower Viewpoint if it is snowbound.
Is monsoon a bad time for Mardi Himal?
Yes, June to September brings heavy rain, leeches in the forest and cloud that usually hides the peaks. The exposed ridge is no place to be in a storm. It is the season to avoid, though the hillsides are lush.
When do the rhododendrons bloom on the Mardi Himal trek?
March and April. The rhododendron forests on the lower ridge turn brilliant red and pink, making spring one of the most beautiful times to trek, alongside excellent early-morning mountain views.
Is Mardi Himal crowded?
It is one of the quieter Annapurna treks, far less busy than ABC or Poon Hill. Peak autumn (October) and spring (April) see the most trekkers, but the high teahouses are limited, so book ahead in season even though the trail itself rarely feels crowded.
