Manaslu Circuit Trek Packing List: Complete Gear Checklist

Manaslu is a teahouse trek that crosses a 5,106 m pass, so you pack light but seriously warm. Here is a complete, category-by-category checklist, and what to rent rather than buy.

Packing Principles

Because Manaslu is a teahouse trek you sleep in lodges and eat cooked meals, so there is no tent, stove or food to carry. But it is higher and colder than a moderate trek, with the Larkya La at 5,106 m, so the warm layers matter more. Two rules:

  • Layer, do not bulk. Temperatures swing from warm gorge forest to bitterly cold pre-dawn on the pass. Several thin layers beat one thick one.
  • Keep it light. If a porter carries your duffel, aim for under 10–12 kg; your daypack holds water, layers, snacks and valuables.

Clothing (the layering system)

LayerItems
Base2–3 moisture-wicking T-shirts, 2 thermal tops & bottoms (merino or synthetic, no cotton)
Mid1 fleece plus 1 light insulated jacket, 1–2 pairs trekking trousers (+ convertible/shorts for the lower gorge)
OuterWarm down jacket (essential for the pass and high villages), waterproof + windproof shell jacket and trousers
ExtremitiesWarm hat, sun hat/cap, buff, liner + warm insulated gloves, gaiters, 4–5 pairs trekking socks, UV sunglasses or goggles

The warm hat and insulated gloves are not optional, the pre-dawn start on the Larkya La is bitterly cold and wind-exposed.

Footwear & Gear

  • Broken-in trekking boots with good ankle support, the single most important item.
  • Camp shoes/sandals for evenings in the lodge.
  • Trekking poles, strongly recommended for the rough gorge trail and the long descent from the pass.
  • Daypack (30–40 L) with a rain cover.
  • Duffel/kit bag if using a porter.
  • Warm sleeping bag rated to about −15 °C, the high lodges at Samdo and Dharamsala are very cold.
  • Headlamp + spare batteries, essential for the pre-dawn pass start.
  • Water bottles/bladder (2–3 L) + purification (filter, tablets or SteriPen); an insulated bottle helps high up.
  • Power bank, charging costs money and is scarce in the upper villages.

Documents, Toiletries & Medical Kit

Documents

  • Passport + photocopies, all three permits (see permits guide), several passport photos, travel insurance with helicopter-evacuation cover valid to at least 5,500 m, and enough cash in Nepali rupees for the whole trek (no ATMs on the route).

Toiletries

  • High-SPF sunscreen and SPF lip balm (UV is fierce at altitude), quick-dry towel, biodegradable soap, hand sanitiser, wet wipes, toilet paper, personal hygiene items.

Medical kit

  • Blister plasters, painkillers, rehydration salts, anti-diarrhoea and broad-spectrum antibiotics (consult your doctor), throat lozenges, any personal medication.
  • Acetazolamide (Diamox) if your doctor advises it, given the 5,106 m pass, see the altitude sickness guide.

What to Rent in Kathmandu (and Seasonal Tweaks)

You do not need to buy everything. Kathmandu's trekking shops in Thamel rent the bulky, expensive items cheaply, typically NPR 100–200/day each:

  • Down jacket and a warm sleeping bag, the two best things to rent if you do not own them.
  • Trekking poles, gaiters and duffel bags are also widely available.

Kathmandu is also the place to buy last-minute socks, sunscreen, snacks and gear at lower prices than home. Sort gear here, as there are no shops once the trek begins.

Seasonal adjustments

  • Late autumn / winter edge (late Nov–Feb): add a warmer sleeping bag, extra thermals, microspikes for snow on the pass, and heavier gloves.
  • Spring (Mar–May): add strong insect repellent and leech protection for the wet lower gorge, plus full rain gear for afternoon showers.
  • Autumn (Sep–Nov): the standard list above is ideal; nights at Samdo and Dharamsala are very cold, so do not skimp on the down jacket and sleeping bag.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I pack for the Manaslu Circuit trek?

Pack a layered clothing system (base, fleece and insulated mid, warm down jacket and waterproof shell), broken-in boots, trekking poles, a −15 °C sleeping bag, headlamp, insulated gloves and a warm hat for the pass, water purification, a power bank, sun protection, documents and a medical kit. Because it is a teahouse trek you need no tent, stove or food.

How warm a sleeping bag do I need for Manaslu?

A sleeping bag rated to about −15 °C is sensible, as the high lodges at Samdo and Dharamsala are very cold, especially in late autumn and winter. Teahouses provide some blankets, but a warm bag is far more comfortable and hygienic. You can rent one cheaply in Kathmandu if you do not own it.

Can I rent trekking gear for the Manaslu Circuit?

Yes. Kathmandu, especially Thamel, has many trekking shops renting down jackets, warm sleeping bags, poles, gaiters and duffels for around NPR 100–200 per day each. Sort all your gear in Kathmandu before you start, as there are no shops once the trek begins.

What gear do I need for the Larkya La pass?

For the pass you need a warm down jacket, a windproof shell, insulated gloves, a warm hat, sunglasses or goggles, gaiters, and a headlamp for the pre-dawn start. Trekking poles help on the long descent to Bimthang, and microspikes are wise if there is fresh snow. The pass is bitterly cold and wind-exposed.

How heavy should my pack be on the Manaslu Circuit?

If a porter carries your main duffel, keep it under about 10–12 kg. Your own daypack should hold only water, snacks, layers, valuables and documents, typically 5–8 kg. Packing light makes the long gorge days and the high pass markedly easier.
