Manaslu Circuit Guide & Porter Rules: Restricted-Area Requirements

Manaslu Circuit has always required a licensed guide — it is a restricted area, so the 2023 TIMS reform changed nothing here. The specific requirement is stricter than on non-restricted treks: you must trek in a group of two or more with a licensed guide from a registered agency. Here is what that costs and why it works this way.

The Restricted-Area Rule

Manaslu is a restricted area designated by the Nepal government, which places specific requirements on foreign trekkers that go beyond the general 2023 TIMS reform:

  • A minimum group of two foreign trekkers is required. Solo foreign trekkers cannot enter, even with a guide. Some agencies pair up solo bookers with other trekkers to meet the two-person minimum.
  • A licensed guide from a government-registered trekking agency is mandatory. Freelance hires are not compliant.
  • Three permits are required: the Manaslu Restricted Area Permit (RAP), the Manaslu Conservation Area Permit (MCAP), and the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) for the western exit. See the Manaslu permits guide.
  • Nepali citizens are exempt from the restricted-area group requirement, but a permit and MCAP are still needed to enter the conservation area.

The rules exist because Manaslu borders the Tibetan region of Chum, which is a sensitive area. Enforcement is strict — the Jagat and Namrung checkpoints check permits and group papers, and you cannot bluff past them.

2026 Guide and Porter Rates

Typical 2026 market rates for the Manaslu Circuit. Rates include the crew's food, lodging, insurance and transport (jeep from Kathmandu to Soti Khola and out from Dharapani).

RoleRate (NPR/day)Rate (USD/day)What it covers
Licensed guide (restricted area)NPR 4,000–6,000USD 30–45Guiding, restricted-area paperwork, pass-day judgement
PorterNPR 2,500–3,500USD 19–26Carries up to ~20–25 kg of client luggage
Guide-porter comboNPR 5,000–7,000USD 37–52Uncommon on Manaslu; the trek is long and remote enough that separate crew is standard

Rates are noticeably higher than the Annapurna Circuit because restricted-area guides are paid a premium for the paperwork burden, remoteness, and the pass-day responsibility. Tips are also higher — expect NPR 1,500–2,000/day for a guide and NPR 1,000–1,500/day for a porter, pooled at the end.

A 14-day Manaslu Circuit guide costs roughly NPR 56,000–84,000 plus NPR 21,000–28,000 in tips. Splitting one porter between two trekkers is standard.

Why the Guide Really Earns Their Fee

Even by the standards of Nepal treks, the Larkya La crossing day is where the guide's judgement matters. Consider what the day involves:

  • 3 am start from Dharmasala (4,460 m) in sub-zero cold.
  • 4–5 hour climb to the pass at 5,106 m in the dark and often in wind.
  • 1,400 m descent to Bimthang that same day, often through fresh snow on the west side.
  • No lodges or backup for 24 km between Dharmasala and Bimthang.

Specific decisions your guide is making that day:

  • Whether to cross at all. Fresh snow, wind or cloud can turn the pass lethal. A good guide talks to lodge owners at Samagaon, Samdo and Dharmasala the day before, hears the current picture, and delays rather than push through.
  • Pace management. Slower is safer at 5,106 m. Your guide reads the group's fitness and altitude tolerance in real time.
  • Recognising altitude sickness. See the Manaslu altitude sickness guide. Descent is the only cure, and starting the descent early enough is a call the guide makes.
  • Route-finding in snow. Fresh snow can obscure the trail past the pass. Guides know the switchbacks by memory.

Porter Weight Limits and Remoteness Risk

The IPPG and KEEP guidelines apply — with extra weight on Manaslu because help is much further away than on Annapurna or Everest. A porter who gets in trouble at Dharmasala is a 3-day walk from the nearest road.

  • Maximum porter load: 25 kg total. Pack light — the trek is long and the pass is high.
  • Two trekkers should share one porter with combined luggage under 20 kg. This is standard on Manaslu.
  • Porters need serious cold-weather clothing from Namrung upward. Down jacket, warm gloves, windproof shell, sunglasses. Reputable agencies provide these; check before you start.
  • Porter insurance is legally required. Confirm the agency has it before you start.
  • The pass day is not a place to be worried about your porter's welfare. Get the setup right in Kathmandu, not at 4,460 m.
The 1994 KEEP-launched porter welfare programme grew out of avoidable porter deaths on Manaslu and other high passes. Underpaid, thinly clothed porters were being pushed over passes and dying of hypothermia. The rules exist because the deaths were real. Hire through a reputable agency and don't second-guess porter welfare.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a guide for the Manaslu Circuit?

Yes, always. Manaslu is a restricted area, so a licensed guide from a government-registered agency has been mandatory since long before the 2023 TIMS reform. This has never changed and never will. Nepali citizens can enter without a guide but still need conservation permits.

Can I do the Manaslu Circuit as a solo foreign trekker?

No. The restricted-area rules require a minimum of two foreign trekkers with a licensed guide. Solo foreign trekkers cannot enter. Many agencies pair solo trekkers with others to meet the two-person minimum — ask about "group joining" if you're booking solo.

How much does a Manaslu guide cost?

Restricted-area guides cost NPR 4,000–6,000 per day in 2026 (roughly USD 30–45), noticeably higher than Annapurna Circuit guides because of the paperwork and remoteness. Over 14 trekking days that is NPR 56,000–84,000. Tips of NPR 1,500–2,000/day are customary.

How does the Manaslu group-size rule work?

You need at least two foreign trekkers in the group, plus the licensed guide. If you're a solo foreign trekker, you can either join an existing group through an agency ("group joining"), pair up with another solo trekker, or have the agency officially list you as a two-person group with a phantom second trekker (some agencies do this, though it is technically a workaround).

Do I need a porter on Manaslu?

Optional, but strongly recommended. The trek is 14 days and finishes with a 5,106 m pass — carrying your own gear the whole way is punishing. Two trekkers commonly share one porter with combined luggage under 20 kg. Guide-porter combos are less common here than on shorter treks.
