Annapurna Base Camp Guide & Porter Rules: What You Need to Hire
Annapurna Base Camp was the classic "first Nepal trek" that trekkers could historically do independently. Since April 2023, foreign trekkers must hire a licensed guide. Here is what that means in practice on the ABC trail, what the crew costs, and how to hire ethically.
The 2023 Guide Rule on ABC
The 1 April 2023 Nepal Tourism Board rule requires all foreign trekkers in TIMS zones to hire a licensed guide. On ABC this applies fully:
- A licensed guide is mandatory for foreign trekkers on the entire ABC route, from Nayapul to the sanctuary and back. Nepali citizens can still trek without a guide.
- The guide must be employed by a government-registered trekking agency.
- You need a TIMS card and an ACAP (Annapurna Conservation Area Permit), both processed by your agency.
- A porter is optional but very common because the trek has plenty of steep-step climbing between Chhomrong and Bamboo where a lighter daypack is welcome.
Enforcement at the ACAP checkpoints in Birethanti and Chhomrong is consistent. Independent trekkers who try to bypass the rule are turned back. See the ABC permits guide.
2026 Guide and Porter Rates
Typical 2026 market rates on the ABC trek. Rates include the crew's food, lodging, insurance and transport.
| Role | Rate (NPR/day) | Rate (USD/day) | What it covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Licensed guide | NPR 3,000–4,500 | USD 22–34 | Guiding, navigation, avalanche-section judgement |
| Porter | NPR 2,000–3,000 | USD 15–22 | Carries up to ~20–25 kg of client luggage |
| Guide-porter combo | NPR 3,500–5,500 | USD 26–41 | One person doing both roles; very common on this short trek |
Rates are lower than Everest or Manaslu because the ABC trek is shorter, lower altitude, and does not involve internal flights or restricted-area permits. A 7-day ABC guide costs roughly NPR 21,000–32,000 plus NPR 6,000–10,000 in tips. Sharing one porter between two trekkers is standard practice.
The guide-porter combo is especially popular on ABC — the trek is short enough and the packs light enough that one person can genuinely do both. It is also the cheapest hiring option.
The Guide's Real Job: The Deurali-MBC Section
The most weather-sensitive section of the ABC trek is the narrow valley between Deurali (3,230 m) and MBC (3,700 m), which sits below steep avalanche-prone slopes. This is where the guide's local knowledge actually matters most:
- The Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) periodically closes this section after heavy snowfall or during warming spells. Your guide checks the current status at Chhomrong before you continue up.
- Even when open, the section is typically crossed in the morning, when overnight cold has stabilised the snow. Guides push the group through quickly rather than lingering.
- The January 2020 avalanche in this section killed four South Korean trekkers and three Nepali guides. It is a real risk in winter and early spring, not a theoretical one.
- If the section is closed, you turn back at Chhomrong. A good guide accepts the decision and does not push a group into risk to avoid disappointment.

How to Hire (Where and When)
Book from Pokhara, not Kathmandu
ABC is the classic Pokhara-based trek. Pokhara agencies know the trail better than Kathmandu agencies and prices tend to be 5–15% lower. Lakeside has dozens of reputable operators — visit two or three, compare their itinerary breakdowns, and pick the one that gives you a specific guide name.
Book online in advance for peak October
Mid-October is the busiest week of the year on ABC. Book at least a month ahead if you want a good guide and a lodge reservation at MBC and ABC (both have limited capacity).
Ask about the specific guide's experience
Ask when they last did ABC and whether they've been through the Deurali-MBC section in the current season. A guide with recent trail knowledge is worth more than any brochure.
Consider a guide-porter combo
Because ABC is only 7 days and altitudes stay under 4,200 m, one person can do both roles well. If you are travelling solo or in a small group, this cuts your crew cost roughly in half.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a guide for ABC?
Yes, if you are a foreign national. Since April 2023, foreign trekkers on ABC must hire a licensed guide from a government-registered trekking agency. Nepali citizens can still trek without a guide.
How much does a guide cost on ABC?
A licensed guide costs NPR 3,000–4,500 per day in 2026 (roughly USD 22–34). Over the standard 7-day trek that is NPR 21,000–32,000 in fees. Tips of NPR 1,000–1,500 per day are customary on top.
Can I do a guide-porter combo on ABC?
Yes, and it is common. One person doing both roles costs NPR 3,500–5,500 per day — cheaper than separate guide + porter and completely workable on the 7-day ABC trek. Best value if your luggage stays under 15 kg.
How much should I tip a guide on the ABC trek?
Standard tips are NPR 1,000–1,500 per day for a guide and NPR 700–1,000 per day for a porter, given at the end of the trek. For a 7-day ABC that is roughly NPR 7,000–10,500 for the guide and NPR 5,000–7,000 for the porter. Not tipping is not a real option.
Do I need a porter for ABC?
Optional. ABC is short and low enough that many fit trekkers just carry a 10 kg daypack themselves. If you have heavier gear or want to enjoy the trek without carrying weight, a porter (or the shared guide-porter combo) is a good investment. Two trekkers commonly share one porter.
