Best Time to Trek Annapurna Base Camp: Month-by-Month

The best time to trek Annapurna Base Camp is autumn (October–November) and spring (March–May). Here is what every month actually feels like on the trail.

The Two Best Seasons

ABC can be trekked year-round, but two windows stand out for clear skies, stable weather and safe conditions in the avalanche-prone upper Sanctuary.

SpringMar–MayExcellent, hazier lateBusy⭐ Rhododendrons in bloom
WinterDec–FebCrisp but coldQuietDoable, avalanche & snow risk
MonsoonJun–SepCloudy, wetEmptyAvoid, leeches, landslides, no views

Month-by-Month

October

The single best month. Post-monsoon air is washed clean, giving the year's sharpest mountain views, with comfortable daytime temperatures and cold but clear nights. Also the busiest: book lodges ahead and expect company at base camp sunrise.

November

Still superb and slightly quieter than October as the month progresses. Crystal skies, cold nights (well below freezing at MBC/ABC). Late November sees the first cold snaps.

December–February

Cold and quiet. Lower stages are pleasant by day, but ABC and MBC are deep-freeze cold and snow closes some high lodges. The big consideration is avalanche risk in the gorge above Deurali after snowfall. Trekkable for the well-prepared, ideally with a guide who reads conditions.

March–April

Spring's headline act: the rhododendron forests below Chhomrong burst into red and pink bloom. Excellent views early in the day, warming temperatures, and lively trails. April can grow hazy in the afternoons as pre-monsoon heat builds.

May

Warm and green low down, with afternoon cloud build-up common. Good for those who want spring colour and fewer crowds than April, but views are often best at dawn before the haze rises.

June–September (Monsoon)

Heavy rain, leeches in the forest, frequent cloud hiding the peaks, and a real risk of landslides on the access roads and trails. Unlike rain-shadow regions such as Mustang, the Annapurna Sanctuary gets the full force of the monsoon. Best avoided.

Snow, Avalanche & Weather Windows

The defining safety factor on ABC is the avalanche-prone gully between Deurali and Machhapuchhre Base Camp. After heavy snowfall, most likely December to April, this section can be dangerous, and fatal avalanches have struck it in past winters.

  • Cross this section early in the morning, when snow is firmest and the slabs above are coldest.
  • Trek with a licensed guide who can read recent conditions and lodge closures.
  • After a big storm, be willing to wait a day or turn back. The mountain will still be there.

More on this in the ABC altitude & safety guide.

Festivals & Timing Tips

  • Dashain & Tihar (Oct–Nov): Nepal's biggest festivals fall in peak season. Trails and lodges are busy and some staff travel home, so book early.
  • For fewer crowds with great weather: aim for late September (early autumn) or late November, and early March or late May in spring.
  • Start early each day year-round, mountains are clearest at dawn before cloud and haze build.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best month to trek Annapurna Base Camp?

October is the best single month, post-monsoon skies give the clearest mountain views of the year with comfortable temperatures. November and March–April are close behind. October is also the busiest, so book lodges ahead.

Can you trek ABC in winter?

Yes, but carefully. December to February brings crisp clear days and quiet trails, but bitter cold at base camp, snow closing some high lodges, and real avalanche risk in the gorge above Deurali after snowfall. Go with a licensed guide who can read conditions.

Is monsoon a bad time for ABC?

Yes, June to September brings heavy rain, leeches, cloud-hidden peaks and landslide risk on the trails and access roads. Unlike rain-shadow Mustang, the Annapurna Sanctuary gets the full monsoon. It is the season to avoid.

When do the rhododendrons bloom on the ABC trek?

March and April. The rhododendron forests below Chhomrong turn brilliant red and pink, making spring one of the most beautiful times to trek, alongside excellent early-morning mountain views.

Is ABC crowded?

In peak autumn (October) and spring (April) the trail and base camp sunrise can be busy. For a quieter trek with similar weather, choose late September, late November or early March.
