Pokhara to Jomsom

Distance, Time & Price at a Glance

The short version: Jomsom, the headquarters of Mustang, is reached from Pokhara by a ~25-minute flight (early morning only) or a ~150 km, 8–10 hour drive up the Kali Gandaki river road.

By Air: One of the World's Great Short Flights

The Pokhara–Jomsom flight is a legend in its own right: a small turboprop climbing out over Phewa Lake, then threading the Kali Gandaki gorge between Annapurna I and Dhaulagiri — two 8,000-metre giants — before dropping onto Jomsom's windy strip at 2,720 m. Flights operate early morning only, before the valley's notorious wind rises, with Summit Air and Tara Air the usual operators.

Fares run roughly NPR 5,000–7,500 for Nepali and Indian nationals and around US$110–130 for foreigners. The catch is reliability: Jomsom weather scrubs flights regularly, and cancellations cascade. Never book the flight the day before an international connection, and hold a road fallback in mind. Left-side seats flying in give the best Dhaulagiri views.

By Road: Jeep & Bus up the Gorge

The road route runs Pokhara → Beni (paved, ~3 hours) → Tatopani hot springs → the dramatic gorge stretch past Ghasa and Marpha → Jomsom. Once one of Nepal's roughest tracks, it has improved substantially — much is now paved or graded — but slides, river crossings and dust keep it an adventure: budget 8–10 hours in good conditions, more in the monsoon.

• Shared jeeps (≈ NPR 2,500–4,000 a seat) are the standard choice — faster and sturdier than buses; direct services run in season, otherwise change at Beni.
• Local buses (≈ NPR 1,500–2,500) are cheapest and slowest, with frequent stops.
• Private jeeps (NPR 25,000–35,000) suit groups and let you break at Tatopani's hot springs or Marpha's apple orchards.

The classic play: fly up, drive down (or vice versa) — you get the flight experience one way and gorge scenery, Marpha and Tatopani the other.

Onward: Muktinath, Mustang & the Trails

Jomsom is a gateway more than a destination. From the bus/jeep stand:

• Muktinath — shared jeeps cover the ~20 km climb to Ranipauwa (the shrine's village) in 1.5–2 hours; the sacred site at 3,710 m is the main draw for most road travellers. See our Kathmandu to Muktinath guide for the full pilgrim route.
• Kagbeni & Upper Mustang — the restricted kingdom begins at Kagbeni, 30–45 minutes north (permit + registered guide required).
• Marpha — Mustang's prettiest village, whitewashed lanes and apple brandy, 30 minutes south.
• Trekkers — Jomsom anchors the lower Annapurna Circuit exit and the Jomsom–Muktinath day-walk section.

Practical Tips

• Fly early or not at all: the valley wind rises by late morning — first flights have the best completion rate.
• Build in a buffer day whichever way you travel; weather rules this valley.
• Permits: the Jomsom/Muktinath area needs ACAP (NPR 3,000 for foreigners) and TIMS for trekkers — arrange in Pokhara. Upper Mustang needs the separate restricted-area permit.
• Altitude: Jomsom sits at 2,720 m and Muktinath at 3,710 m — go gently on day one, hydrate, and see our AMS notes if heading higher.
• Season: the Kali Gandaki sits partly in the rain shadow, so this route works even in monsoon months — though road slides below Ghasa are likeliest then. Spring and autumn are ideal.
• Cash: Jomsom has ATMs but they are unreliable — carry what you need from Pokhara.
