Pathibhara Devi Cost & Budget: Flights, Jeeps, Lodges & Offerings

Pathibhara itself charges no entry fee — the goddess receives what you choose to offer. The real cost of the pilgrimage is the journey to Nepal's far east: flights or buses, hill jeeps, simple lodges and food, plus the cable car if you ride it. Here is what to budget, item by item.

Where the Money Goes

For a trip from Kathmandu, transport dominates the budget; everything on the ground in Taplejung is cheap by any standard. Approximate per-person figures:

ItemTypical cost (NPR)
Flight Kathmandu–Bhadrapur (one-way)~5,500–9,000
Bus Kathmandu–Taplejung (one-way)~2,000–3,500
Shared jeep Bhadrapur–Phungling~1,500–2,500
Shared jeep Phungling–Kaflepati~300–600
Lodge room, Phungling / Kaflepati (per night)~800–2,500
Meals (dal bhat, tea) per day~800–1,500
Cable car round trip (if riding)Few thousand; confirm locally
Offerings & donationsAs you wish; ~200–1,000 is common

All figures are typical rates that move with fuel prices and season, treat them as planning guides and confirm locally, especially the newly opened cable car fare.

Transport: The Big Line Item

The Kathmandu–Bhadrapur flight (~45 minutes) typically costs NPR 5,500–9,000 one-way depending on airline, season and how early you book; festival-period seats sell out weeks ahead and cost more. The overland bus is far cheaper at roughly NPR 2,000–3,500, but takes 16–20 hours.

From Bhadrapur, shared jeeps to Phungling run roughly NPR 1,500–2,500 per seat for the 7–9 hour hill drive; chartering a whole jeep costs several times that but sets your own schedule, worthwhile for families and groups. The short Phungling–Kaflepati jeep is a few hundred rupees per seat, more to charter.

  • Book festival travel early. Around Dashain and Ram Navami every seat, flight and jeep in the region is contested.
  • Budget a buffer day's costs — hill roads and eastern weather cause delays, and a spare night's lodging is cheap insurance.

Full route detail is in the how to reach guide.

Lodges & Food on the Ground

Accommodation in the region is simple and inexpensive. In Phungling, guesthouse rooms run roughly NPR 800–2,500 a night depending on comfort, en-suite bathrooms and reliable hot water sit at the top of that range. At the Kaflepati trailhead, basic pilgrim lodges cost about the same or less, with plain bedding and shared facilities; sleeping there sets up the dawn climb.

Food is honest hill fare: dal bhat for a few hundred rupees a plate, noodles, eggs and endless glasses of tea. Budget roughly NPR 800–1,500 per day for meals, a little more if you snack your way up the trail's tea stalls, which is half the fun.

  • Rooms vanish on festival days — around Dashain, Navaratri and Ram Navami, book ahead or arrive by early afternoon.
  • Prices are honest here; hard bargaining over a NPR 1,000 room in a remote district helps no one.

Cable Car, Offerings & Small Costs

The newly opened cable car is the one genuinely uncertain line in the budget. Fares are still settling and may be revised; as rough guidance expect a round trip in the region of a few thousand rupees, with lower rates for Nepali nationals, and confirm the current fare and operating status locally before you count on it. Walking, of course, is free.

At the shrine, spend what your devotion suggests: a puja plate of flowers, incense and sweets from trailside stalls costs a couple of hundred rupees, a bell to hang or cloth to tie somewhat more, and donations to the temple are entirely at your discretion. There is no entry ticket.

  • Carry cash in small notes. ATMs exist in Phungling but can be empty or offline; there is effectively no card payment beyond it. Bring what you need from Kathmandu or Birtamod.
  • Porters and local guides can be hired informally at Kaflepati in season for a few hundred to a couple of thousand rupees, agree the price before setting off.

Sample Budget: 3–4 Days from Kathmandu

A realistic per-person budget for a fly-in pilgrimage, travelling simply but not austerely:

ItemBudget (NPR)
Flights Kathmandu–Bhadrapur return11,000–18,000
Jeeps (Bhadrapur–Phungling return + trailhead)4,000–6,500
Lodging, 3 nights2,500–7,500
Meals, 4 days3,500–6,000
Offerings, tea stops, sundries1,000–3,000
Total (walking both ways)~22,000–41,000
Cable car round trip (optional)+ a few thousand; confirm locally

Going by bus instead of flying cuts the total towards NPR 12,000–20,000 at the cost of two long road days. A comfortable private-jeep version with the best rooms might reach NPR 55,000 or more. Either way, Pathibhara remains one of Nepal's most affordable great pilgrimages, the spending is measured in effort and time as much as money. Pair it with the tea gardens of Ilam en route to stretch the same flights further.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a Pathibhara Devi trip cost from Kathmandu?

A realistic per-person budget for a 3 to 4 day fly-in pilgrimage is roughly NPR 22,000 to 41,000, covering return flights to Bhadrapur (about NPR 11,000 to 18,000), shared jeeps, three nights in simple lodges, meals and offerings. Taking the overland bus instead of flying can cut the total to roughly NPR 12,000 to 20,000, at the cost of two very long road days.

Is there an entry fee at Pathibhara Devi temple?

No. The shrine has no entry ticket. Your only costs at the temple are what you choose to offer: a puja plate of flowers, incense and sweets costs a couple of hundred rupees from trailside stalls, and donations to the temple are entirely at your discretion.

How much is the flight from Kathmandu to Bhadrapur?

Typically around NPR 5,500 to 9,000 one-way for the roughly 45-minute flight, depending on airline, season and how early you book. Fares rise and seats sell out around the big festival periods such as Dashain, so book ahead and confirm current prices.

How much do lodges cost in Phungling and Kaflepati?

Roughly NPR 800 to 2,500 per night. Phungling guesthouses at the top of that range offer en-suite bathrooms and hot water; the pilgrim lodges at the Kaflepati trailhead are simpler, with plain bedding and shared facilities, and cost the same or less. Rooms fill fast on festival days, so book ahead or arrive early.

How much is the Pathibhara cable car ticket?

The cable car is newly opened and fares are still settling. As rough guidance, expect a round trip in the region of a few thousand Nepali rupees, with lower rates for Nepali nationals and discounts for children. Confirm the current fare and operating status locally in Phungling before building it into your budget; walking the trail remains free.

Can I use cards or ATMs near Pathibhara?

Barely. Phungling has ATMs but they can be empty or offline, and card payment is effectively unavailable beyond the town. Carry all the cash you expect to need in small Nepali rupee notes, ideally withdrawn in Kathmandu or in Birtamod on the drive up, covering transport, lodging, food, offerings and a buffer for delays.
