History & Legend of Manakamana, the Wish-Fulfilling Goddess

Manakamana is one of Nepal's most revered Hindu shrines, its origins woven into the early history of the Gorkha kingdom. Here is the legend of the wish-fulfilling goddess and why pilgrims have come for centuries.

What the Name Means

The name Manakamana joins two words: mana, meaning heart, and kamana, meaning wish. Together they name the goddess who fulfils the heartfelt wishes of her devotees. She is worshipped as a form of Bhagwati, an incarnation of the goddess Parvati.

The Legend of the Queen & Lakhan Thapa

The shrine's origins are tied to the 17th-century Gorkha court of King Ram Shah. By tradition, the king's queen was believed to possess divine powers, known only to her devoted attendant, the warrior Lakhan Thapa.

After the king's death the queen committed sati on his funeral pyre. Before doing so, the story goes, she promised Lakhan Thapa that she would reappear. Some time later a farmer ploughing the hilltop is said to have struck a stone from which blood and milk flowed — a sign of the goddess's presence. Lakhan Thapa, recognising the queen's promise fulfilled, established worship at the site and became the shrine's first priest. His descendants have served as its priests ever since.

You can see how that heritage shapes worship today in the darshan & puja guide.

Why It Matters

For Hindus across Nepal and beyond, Manakamana is a place where wishes are granted, and giving thanks for a fulfilled wish is central to the pilgrimage. Its setting on a ridge in Gorkha — the heartland from which Prithvi Narayan Shah went on to unify Nepal — adds a deep historical resonance to the religious one.

For most of its history the shrine was reached only by a long climb. That changed in 1998 with the opening of the Manakamana cable car, Nepal's first, which brought the goddess within reach of far more pilgrims and visitors.
