Best Time to Trek Everest Base Camp: Month-by-Month
The best time to trek Everest Base Camp is autumn (late September–November) and spring (March–May). Here is what every month actually feels like in the Khumbu, and how the season affects the Lukla flight.
The Two Best Seasons
EBC can be trekked outside the monsoon, but two windows stand out for clear skies, stable weather, and reliable Lukla flights. The wrong season does not just spoil the views, it grounds the flight that gets you to and from the trailhead.
| Season | Months | Views | Crowds | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Autumn | late Sep–Nov | Best of the year | Busiest | ⭐ Peak season |
| Spring | Mar–May | Excellent, hazier late | Busy | ⭐ Climbing season at base camp |
| Winter | Dec–Feb | Crisp but bitterly cold | Quiet | Doable for the well-prepared, deep freeze high up |
| Monsoon | Jun–Aug | Cloudy, wet | Empty | Avoid, leeches low down, flights frequently grounded |
Month-by-Month
Late September to October
The single best window. Post-monsoon air is washed clean, giving the year's sharpest mountain views, with comfortable daytime temperatures and cold but clear nights. Also the busiest: book lodges and flights ahead and expect company at the Kala Patthar sunrise.
November
Still superb and slightly quieter as the month progresses. Crystal skies and stable Lukla flights, but the cold builds steadily, nights at Gorak Shep are well below freezing, and late November sees the first hard cold snaps.
December to February
Cold and quiet, with often beautifully clear skies. Lower stages near Lukla and Namche are pleasant by day, but Lobuche, Gorak Shep and Kala Patthar are a deep freeze, some high teahouses close, and snow can block the trail. Trekkable for the well-prepared and well-insulated, ideally with a guide who reads conditions.
March to April
Spring's headline act. Rhododendron forests lower down burst into bloom, days grow warmer, and this is the Everest climbing season, so base camp itself comes alive with expedition tents, a sight in its own right. Excellent views early in the day.
May
Warm low down with afternoon cloud and haze building as pre-monsoon heat rises. Good for spring colour and the busy base camp, but mountain views are usually best at dawn before the haze.
June to August (Monsoon)
Heavy rain makes lower trails muddy and leech-prone, cloud hides the peaks, and, crucially, Lukla flights are frequently grounded by weather. Best avoided unless you have lots of buffer time and low expectations of views.
The Lukla Flight & Weather Windows
The defining seasonal factor on EBC is not avalanche risk but the weather-dependent Lukla flight. Lukla airport has a short, steep runway in a deep valley and no instrument landing, so flights only operate in clear conditions and are frequently delayed or cancelled, sometimes for a day or more.
- Fly early in the day, morning flights have the best weather window before cloud builds.
- Build in buffer days, at least one or two, so a grounded flight does not cost you your flight home, see the itinerary guide.
- In peak season, flights often shift to Manthali (Ramechhap), a 4–5 hour drive from Kathmandu, to ease congestion.
- A helicopter transfer is a pricier fallback if you are stuck for days.

Festivals & Timing Tips
- Dashain & Tihar (Oct–Nov): Nepal's biggest festivals fall in peak season. Trails, lodges and flights are busy and some staff travel home, so book early.
- Mani Rimdu (Oct–Nov): the colourful masked-dance festival at Tengboche Monastery is a Khumbu highlight if your dates align.
- For fewer crowds with great weather: aim for late September or late November in autumn, and early March or late May in spring.
- Start early each day year-round, the Khumbu peaks are clearest at dawn before cloud and haze build.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best month to trek Everest Base Camp?
Late September to October is the best window, post-monsoon skies give the clearest mountain views of the year with comfortable temperatures and reliable Lukla flights. November and March to April are close behind. October is also the busiest, so book lodges and flights ahead.
Can you trek EBC in winter?
Yes, but carefully. December to February brings often beautifully clear skies and quiet trails, but a deep freeze at the high villages of Lobuche and Gorak Shep, some closed high teahouses, and possible snow on the trail. Go well insulated and with a licensed guide who can read conditions.
Is monsoon a bad time for EBC?
Yes. June to August brings heavy rain, leeches and muddy lower trails, cloud-hidden peaks, and, crucially, frequently grounded Lukla flights. It is the season to avoid unless you have plenty of buffer time and low expectations of views.
When is the Everest climbing season?
Spring, roughly April to May, is the main Everest summit season. During this window Everest Base Camp itself fills with expedition tents preparing for the climb, which is a memorable sight for trekkers even though they do not climb the mountain.
How does the season affect the Lukla flight?
Hugely. Lukla flights only operate in clear weather, so the autumn and spring windows give the most reliable schedules, while monsoon and unsettled winter days see frequent delays and cancellations. Whatever the season, fly early in the day and build buffer days into your trip.
